The Bar Code Rebellion

The Bar Code Rebellion is a 2006 novel written by American science fiction and fantasy author Suzanne Weyn. It is the sequel to the 2004 novel, The Bar Code Tattoo.

Plot

Kayla, the teenage heroine of The Bar Code Tattoo, is back. She is a member of a small group of rebels who refuse to receive the government's bar code identification tattoos. During a march on Washington in which many of the protesters are captured, Kayla manages to escape. On the run and not knowing who she can trust Kayla is beset by seeing alternate visions of herself in the media. One seems to be a spokesperson on television saying how wonderful life with the tattoo is. Kayla believes it is a computer enhanced, altered image of herself. Life is increasingly difficult without the bar codes, but Kayla meets many who are still aggressively resisting the government mandate. Kayla decides to stay involved with a seemingly growing network of resistance that is actively working to bring down those requiring the tattoo. Everyone finds out about the barcode tattoo and realizes that it has powers that everyone wants. Along this road, Kayla finds other separate versions of herself, quickly realizing that she is not the only girl with her genetic code and looks. This sends her into a search for who she really is, and she uncovers things some might think are best hidden.
